About the university

Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University was established on 9th Aug, 2005 at Ludhiana and started functioning from 21st April, 2006, with only one College of Veterinary Science which was established in 1969 and shifted from Punjab Agricultural University to Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University. The university has grown remarkably and is already among the top Veterinary Universities in the country. In order to produce highly efficient and skilled human resource for giving further boost to activities of livestock and fishery sectors in Punjab, the university has established College of Fisheries, College of Dairy Science and Technology, School of Animal Biotechnology, School of Public Health and Zoonoses and Veterinary Polytechnic for teaching, research and extension in the respective fields. Regional Livestock Research and Training Centres at Kaljharani (Bathinda), Talwara (Hoshiarpur) and Booh (TaranTaran) have been established for catering to the specific needs of the area. Three Krishi Vigyan Kendras have been established at Taran Taran, Barnala and Mohali districts of Punjab for technology assessment, refinement and demonstration. The University has been recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) to receive central assistance under section 12(B) of UGC Act, 1956. GADVASU got accreditation from the UGC and the ICAR and has been admitted as a regular member of the Association of Indian Agricultural Universities (AIAU) and Association of Indian Universities (AIU). Indian Council of Agricultural Research has accredited all the three constituent colleges of the university i.e. College of Veterinary Science, College of Fisheries and College of Dairy Science and Technology. As per the NIRF-2017, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, the GADVASU has been ranked 81st among all the institutions, 50th among all the universities and 2nd among Veterinary Universities in India. The ICAR has ranked GADVASU as over all 9th best among the Agricultural Universities, Veterinary Universities and ICAR Research Institutes and 1st among the State Veterinary Universities of India in 2017.

Objective

1.       To provide trained veterinary professionals including Graduates, Master and Doctorate level specialists capable of handling livestock health and production aspects according to the needs of the State.

2.       To undertake need based research work following multi-disciplinary approach to address the various problems related to farming sector.

3.       To promote continuing professional education in veterinary, fishery and dairy sciences.

4.       To provide consultancy and specialist services to livestock owners, government, semi-government and allied agencies.

5.       To run Referralhospital for specialized treatment of the livestock patients and to provide clinical training to the students.

6.       To provide expert guidance to germplasm centres viz. dairy, including Sahiwal cattle, fishery, piggery, poultry etc.

7.       To provide technical expert opinion to different government and other agencies.

8.       To foster faculty development by providing them opportunities to participate in appropriate training programmes, conferences, workshops, seminars, symposia etc. and avail opportunities in exchange programmes.

9.      To encourage cooperation and collaboration with other departments, colleges, universities and industries, both national and international

 

Achievements

 

1.      Capacity building and skill updating of faculty has been enhanced teaching efficiency.

2.      Up gradation of teaching aids has strengthened the teaching efficiency.

3.      Development/upgradation of infrastructural facilities for practical exposure and hands on training.

4.      Strengthening of student amenities (library and computers) and provision of online resources and internet connectivity has improved the UG/PG teaching/research efficiency.

5.      Strengthening of disease diagnosis, clinical facilities, student training in clinical skills and dissemination of advanced techniques to scientists from other institutions.

6.      Post graduate research has been strengthened

7.      Residential capacity of university for both girls and boys has been enhanced.

8.      Sports facilities in the both boys and girls hostels has been strengthened.

9.      Indoor wards and critical care facility for large and small animals have been upgraded.
