About the university

Lala Lajpat Rai University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (LUVAS) was established by Haryana Legislature Act No. 7 of 2010 after carving out from Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar on December 1, 2010. The University has two constituent colleges and one institute of Para veterinary Sciences. College of Veterinary Sciences (COVS) is the initial academic unit of the University engaged in graduate, postgraduate and doctoral education, research and extension education in veterinary and animal sciences. The College has its roots in the first Veterinary School established at Lahore in the undivided India in the year 1882. With the formation of Haryana Agricultural University (HAU) in 1970, the college became a part of HAU. The College became constituent college after creation of Lala Lajpat Rai University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences on 01 December 2010. Through its academic excellence, the College has produced great human resource. A large number of its alumni have been topmost functionaries in many prestigious academic and research institutions in India and abroad. Apart from this, the graduates and postgraduates of this College have contributed significantly to the White Revolution and food security in the state and the country. College of Dairy Sciences and Technology (CODST) is the second constituent college of LUVAS, Hisar opened from the academic session 2016-17 with the approval of Government and first college of Dairy Science and Technology in Haryana state. It was approved by BOM vide Item No. B-3 in 6th Meeting held on 25.11.2013. Primary mission of college is to develop highly professional dairy specialists through value based education, research and training in dairy technology for meeting technological and societal needs. The Institute of Para Veterinary Sciences (IPVS) was established in February, 2014 with a sense of clarity and purpose of producing Para- Veterinarians to assist the Registered Veterinary Practitioners. The Institute is running various diploma courses each of two-year duration, namely, Veterinary Livestock Development Diploma (VLDD) and Diploma in Veterinary Laboratory Technology (DVLT). At present, 11 private colleges have been affiliated to LUVAS for degree and diploma courses. The University is confident to grow by adding other allied faculties� viz. Fisheries, Animal Biotechnology, Livestock and Rural Management in a phased manner. It intends to establish a state-of-the-art super speciality diagnostic laboratory-cum-epidemiological centre with BSL-3 facilities to monitor emerging and re-emerging diseases. The university is also planning to establish Institute of Laboratory Animal Sciences, Central Animal House Facility and Post-mortem Centre with state-of-the-art facilities. The University is working with the line departments for active co-operation and collaboration for quick transmission of technology from laboratory to end users and strengthen extension services. The Government of Haryana has allotted land in Hisar to raise an ultramodern new campus of the University for which foundation stone has already been laid. The college of Dairy Science and Technology is near completion and the construction work of the Administrative Block is in progress. The new campus is intended to be environmental friendly, energy efficient based on vertical expansion and green building concept.

Objective

The University has been established with the following objectives:

(a) To impart education in different branches of Veterinary, animal sciences, fishery sciences and allied sciences as it may determine, from time to time;

(b) To further advancement in learning and research in Veterinary, animal sciences, fishery sciences and other allied sciences and to undertake extension of such specialized knowledge to the needy people;

(c) To undertake study in marketing strategies of live-stock and live-stock products, conservation of live-stock breeds and wild animals;

(d) To liaison and establish vital linkage with the concerned departments of Animal Husbandry, Fisheries and Dairy Development of the State Government and Union Government, National and International Research Institutes specialized in the field of Veterinary, animal sciences, fishery sciences and allied sciences with a view to keep abreast of the latest technology;

(e) To raise level of Veterinary study to international standards; and

(f) Such other objects, as the Board may determine, from time to time.
