Tamil Nadu Fisheries University (TNFU) is the State-funded Fisheries University in India imparting professional education, research and training to enhance fish production and utilization by following the State Agricultural University (SAU) pattern and syllabi.

Objective

Despite agricultural education being in the list of state subjects, central government through ICAR provides financial support to SAUs and other institutions in the form of development grant to make agricultural education better. ICAR coordinates three activities across the country. These are Education Planning and Home Science; Human Resource Development and Education Quality Assurance and Reforms. Specific activities are listed below:

 

1.     Course curriculum revision through Deans Committee.

2.     Framing of minimum standards of higher agricultural education (MSHAE)

3.     Reforms in governance of SAUs through implementation of Model Act.

4.     Setting up of Norms and Accreditation Committee.

5.     Annual interaction with AUs Vice-Chancellors by holding VCs Conference, which is a platform to review and refine various programmes implemented by the ICAR and maintaining uniformity in governance and financial management system.

6.     Providing financial support for strengthening of infrastructure and development of competent human resource.

7.     ICAR also provides technical inputs for the establishment of CAUs in coordination with DARE, Government of India.

 

Achievements

Significant Achievements/Impacts out of the ICAR Development Grant Provided to the University:

 

1.    ICAR-Niche Area of Excellence programme in Fish Safety and Quality Assurance is operated from Department of Fish Quality Assurance and Management.

2.    Laboratory facilities created under the ICAR- NAE programme at FCRI, Thoothukudi.

3.    Twenty five teaching manuals were prepared for the benefit of students.

4.    New Biotechnology laboratory was established in TNFU Campus at Vaniyanchavadi, Chennai.

5.    Central Instrumentation facility created at FC&RI, Thoothukudi

6.    Library of FC&RI, Thoothukudi was fully atomized
