About the university

The Kerala Agricultural University (KAU), came into existence on February 24th 1971 by the Act 33 of 1971 of the Kerala State Legislature, entitled The Agricultural University Act, 1971. However, the Kerala Agricultural University became operational only on February 1st 1972 when, the then existing two educational and 21 research institutions administered by the Departments of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry of the Government of Kerala, were brought under the umbrella of KAU for facilitating the sustainable and accelerated development of Agriculture in the State.

The KAU is the primary and the principal instrumentality of the Kerala State in providing human resources, and skills and technology, required for the sustainable development of its Agriculture, defined broadly encompassing all production activities based on land and water, including crop production, forestry and co-operatives by conducting, interfacing and integrating education, research and extension in these spheres of economic endeavour.

With the division of KAU to form new universities of Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University and Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies during 2010-11, the number of institutions under KAU was reduced to six Colleges, six Regional Agricultural Research Stations (RARS), 15 Research Stations, seven Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVK) and 16 other units.  The University offers diploma, graduate, post-graduate and doctoral programmes in almost all disciplines and specialities related to Agriculture, Horticulture, Forestry, Co-operation, Banking, Management, Agricultural Engineering, Food Engineering and allied sciences through its three faculties (Agriculture, Agricultural Engineering and Forestry), six constituent colleges and 32 departments.

Coming to the mandate and goal, the University functions for Excellence in Agricultural Education, Research and Extension for Sustainable Agricultural Development and Livelihood security of farming community and aims to provide human resources, skills and technology required for sustainable development of agriculture, including crop production, Co-operation, Forestry, Agricultural Engineering, Home Science and other allied disciplines by integrating education, research and extension.

The vision of KAU is to create an enabling environment and institutions of excellence to impart quality higher education in Agriculture and to institute better agricultural research and out reach programmes so as to improve the livelihoods and welfare of the farmers, consumers and other stake holders through growth and sustainability inclusive of social development. The mission mode activities envisaged by KAU are to transform States agricultural education into a demand-driven efficient system, to provide academic services and high quality output in education, research and extension, to promote centres of excellence, and to provide skilled, analytical and globally competitive human resources to meet the national needs for sustainable and inclusive growth.

Objective

The University focuses its strategy on synergizing multi-disciplinary education and strengthening problem-specific research relevant to the state and help building innovative extension systems for sustainable management of natural resources, sustainable agricultural production and overall improvement of rural livelihoods.

To achieve the Mission and Goal, the University propose to adopt the following programmes:

Provide quality education in Agriculture, Horticulture, Co-operation, Forestry, Agricultural Engineering, Home Science and other allied disciplines.

Undertake basic, applied and adaptive research to address current and future challenges of farming community and to provide management options relevant to the prevailing agroclimatic and socioeconomic situations.

Generate appropriate technologies to support sustainable growth of agricultural entrepreneurship and agri-business.

Develop innovative extension strategies and formulate effective mechanisms for Transfer of Technology to institutions and farmers for enhanced and sustainable agricultural production leading to improved rural livelihoods.

Locate and protect biodiversity to preserve agro-ecosystem of the state and to document traditional knowledge and technologies.

 

Achievements

New Departments:

In college of Forestry, the existing three departments were renamed on the light of fifth Dean Committee suggestions.

New Labs:

Equipment like ICP-OES, gamma irradiation chamber were purchased at the Central Instrumentation Lab. Video conferencing units were established in all the colleges. Chemicals/ glasswares/ equipments etc. were purchased to support the existing academic programme. The renovation and up- gradation of the facilities in the Laboratories of all the colleges were carried out. In College of Agriculture, Padannakkad VAM lab for research and Production- Organic Input Production Laboratory was established.

New Educational programmes:

Important technical matters relating the waste management and soil resources were documented and displayed.

New Skill training programmes:

A Skill development Centre was started at College of Agriculture, Padannakkad.

New Civil Works/infrastructural facilities:

At College of Agriculture, Vellayani, P.G. Research Laboratory was strengthene with new laboratory tables and chairs, teaching aids were purchased to improve the quality of teaching, plastering and painting of classrooms were also carried out. In College of Forestry, smart classroom facilities were established in the new academic block and furnishing of the classrooms were also done.At college of Agriculture, Padannakkad, renovation of Auditorium, Ladies Hostel,Mens Hostel, Central Instrumentation Laboratory facilities were carried out.

Green initiative made:

Green initiatives like use of Solar energy for electricity generation has been implemented in the campus of College of Forestry, Vellanikkara.Solar Panel installation, Shifting to LED lights, Ecofriendly residential campus , Development of Instructional Farm:Coconut Garden developed as a part of Centenary Celebrations were done at College of Agriculture, Padannakkad.
