About the university

The Maharashtra state is bestowed with unique, rich and diverse animal and fisheries resources that contribute significantly to the gross product of the state. For sustainable management, conservation and augmentation of these animal and fisheries resources, the Maharashtra Animal & Fishery Sciences University was established under the State Act No. 1998 (MAH. XVII of 1998) on 3rd December, 2000 with its Headquarter at Nagpur; the famous City of Oranges located centrally in the country and connected well with different parts by road, rail and air. The university has been carved out of the four agricultural universities in the state by transferring five Veterinary Colleges, one Post Graduate Institute of Veterinary and Animal Sciences and one Dairy Technology College. Considering the need for developing additional human resource in the fields of Fishery Science and Dairy Technology, two Fishery Science Colleges and an additional Dairy Technology College were established by the university after five years of its formation. His Excellency Hon. P. C. Alexander, Chancellor of University & Governor of Maharashtra inaugurated the university establishment on 3rd December, 2000.

Objective

The act inscribes the objectives of the University among others as under:

v  To impart education in diverse branches of Veterinary Medicine, Animal, Fishery Sciences and Dairy Technology and further advancement of learning and prosecution of research in these areas.

v  To undertake extension programs in these sciences to benefit rural farmers in cooperation and in close coordination with the State Departments of Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development and Fisheries, Government of Maharashtra and the NGOs.

v  To provide techno-businessmen to produce direct employment.

v  To train unemployed youth for employment.

 

Achievements

During F.Y. 2016-17, the university has not received any ICAR grants because the accreditation of the university was under process. Nevertheless, the university has the following significant achievements/ impacts out of the ICAR development grants provided earlier.

i.          Under Niche Area of Excellence on Centre for zoonoses the MAFSU in collaboration with ICAR-ICMR has been established as a unique platform for veterinary and human medicine to combat zoonotic disease to achieve One Health approach.

ii.          Under Niche Area of Excellence on Centre for zoonoses a duplex PCR has been standardized for simultaneous detection of Brucellosis and Tuberculosis in animals. The technique is under validation with collaborators and has a potential of patenting. Further, the cases of reverse zoonoses with respect to Tuberculosis in animals and human have been detected in collaboration with medical collaborator; Central India Institute of Medical Sciences (CIIMS), Nagpur. Proteins for rapid, sensitive and simple serological assay (on-field) for diagnosis of Tuberculosis in animals have been identified and attempts are going on for standardization of the test.

iii.          Under Experiential Learning Programme, Nagpur Veterinary College, Nagpur has established Critical Care Unit at Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex for exposure of UG and PG students to modern diagnostic equipments and advanced healthcare management practices of diverse clinical cases such as trauma due to road traffic accidents, acute and chronic renal failure, ascites, intravascular coagulation, dilated cardiomyopathy, uraemic peritonitis, prostatic cysts, prostatic adenocarcinoma, diverse cardiac problems, hypoxic patients and pyrexia of unknown origin etc. This unit has become very popular in very short period that it receives referrals from states of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh also. The referrals include pet animals, large animals and occasionally wild animals. Final year B.V.Sc. & A.H. Students, P.G., Ph.D., and internee students are entrusted with clinical responsibilities round the clock under the supervision of a concerned teacher.

iv.          Established Indian Major Carp fish breeding and seed production Centre and Magur fish breeding and rearing unit which is of its own kind in Maharashtra. The unit has produced more than 3.50 Crore fish semi-fingerling and its distribution among the farmers and fishermen. This is an additional activity established under the Experiential Learning Programme on Aquafarming apart from the regular experiential learning activity for the students.

v.          Established fish culture in polythene lined farm ponds which have the capacity to stock fingerlings @ 12000 nos./ha with development of feed chart for maintenance of FCR of 1:1.2 for proper growth rate. Every year at least 2-3 new fish culturists are encouraged for adopting this scientific technology. This is also an additional activity established under the Experiential Learning Programme on Aquafarming apart from the regular experiential learning activity for the students.

vi.          Under Tribal Sub Plan on Clean Milk Production the assembled kits comprising of CMT paddle, CMT reagent, teat dip cup, teat dip reagent, muslin cloth, napkin, nail cutter, disinfectant, broom, bucket, record register, pen, hand-wash etc and a zip bag holding were supplied for clean milk production. The kits are distributed to 90 tribal beneficiaries in Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra during trainings conducted in the years 2014-15 and 2015-16.

vii.          Under Tribal Sub Plan on Establishment of Community based animal husbandry practices in the tribal villages of Gadchiroli District of Maharashtra State a touch screen module on Animal Husbandry-Reproductive Management Practices in Cattle and Buffaloes for Tribal Livestock Farmers in Pictorial and Vernacular Language were provided.

viii.          The university has established an International Hostel and the Controller of Examinations Buildings at MAFSU Headquarter from the grants provided by Agricultural Education Division of ICAR in the XII plan period.

ix.          Constructed Girl Hostel at College of Dairy Technology, Warud (Pusad).

x.          Created Library facilities at constituent colleges which include E-books, Integrated Library System using open-source software Koha to facilitate speedy access to advanced learning materials to the students for their success in regular as well as competitive examinations.

xi.          The grants from Agricultural Education Division of ICAR have great impact on the imparting quality education to the students which has been achieved by procuring the modern equipments for teaching and research purpose under various strengthening and development programmes of Agricultural Education Division and also by providing best learning environment in the well-resourced library and the hostels.
