Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir, Srinagar

About the university

The establishment of agricultural university under the name Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology was passed by the State Legislature in the 33rd year of the Republic of India on 31st of March, 1982 which came into force on 1st of August,1982 with its jurisdiction over the entire State of Jammu and Kashmir and headquarter at Shalimar, Srinagar. With the establishment of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST), agricultural education, research and extension training units were transferred to SKUAST from various development departments of Jammu and Kashmir State viz. agriculture, animal husbandry, sheep husbandry and sericulture. The university operates on the Land Grant College concept of USA following the Model Act of SAUs evolved by ICAR. It is a multi-campus University. It is a matter of great satisfaction that extremely incoherent and stagnated research infrastructure, an initial customary educational base and non-existent extension education services have given way to an organized institution of SKUAST, which has taken over responsibility of supporting the state in its effort to develop agricultural economy in agriculture and allied sectors. There is no doubt that SKUAST has grown faster than many other agricultural universities of the country. In the year 1998-99, the territorial jurisdiction of the University was redefined by amending the SKUAST Act 1982 under which a separate agriculture university was established for Jammu Division and named as Sher-e- Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu(SKUAST-J). Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir has jurisdiction over Kashmir Valley and Ladakh comprising two agro-ecological zones. Subsequently SKUAST Kashmir made a beginning by pooling the teaching and research infrastructure that existed with the State government.

Objective

Food and livelihood security of approximately 65 percent of the population in Kashmir valley comes through agriculture and its allied sectors. The average size of farms is becoming smaller, therefore the farming no longer seems to remain as an activity of sustenance in Kashmir valley. This demands that productivity of crops grown in the region need to be improved considerably for which the region has ample scope, coupled with the adoption of scientific way of cultivation of crops that could prove handy in harnessing the economic potential of the rural masses.

Achievements

1.                  Improvement in laboratory infrastructure:

Four UG Laboratories were created from ICAR grants in the college of Horticulture

The Infrastructure with regard to existing laboratories of soil and water engineering, Processing and food engineering and Farm power and machinery in college of Agri engineering have been enhanced. Many new laboratory items as per fifth dean committee recommendations have been procured and many practicals which were earlier not being conducted are being done in these laboratories. The intake capacity of the students to conduct practicals has also been increased.

2.                  Human resource development through training programmes and summer schools sponsored by ICAR conducted in the college to participants from outside the state and various development departments has helped in interaction inter and intra state interaction and thus improved the vision and knowledge of the scientists. It helps in the dissemination of technical knowhow.

3.                  New Skill training programmes: The support provided by ICAR has equally helped in the research development. A number of new skills have been developed and also the improvement in infrastructure as a result of ICAR grants has helped in creating a research base in the university to work on the thrust areas for the benefits of the farmers and stakeholders.A high throughput Allele specific genotyping test using KASP technology has been developed in 2016 for identification of the lambs, at an early age, carrying one or two or no copies of the FecB gene. The test is quick and robust, with 96 samples in two hours. The test shall help to select the lambs at an early age, thus reducing pressure on space and resources, and help in the marker assisted breeding of the sheep there by improving the genetic gain.

Genes responsible for Pashimana fiber growth were identified. Highly expressed genes in telogen include: FGF18, BMP2, BMP4, DKK1, SFRP4, Estrogen receptors and cathapsin-2 protein, which restricts follicle growth by inhibiting various developmental pathways. Genes that are up-regulated in anageninclude:KAP8, MEST, FGF5, HOX13, FOXN1, FGF20, which helps in growth and generation.

Development of Top Paddle operated Charkha and their distribution for popularization among beneficiary spinners. It was observed that there is Improvement in the income by 97.10 (%) as against Traditional one (from Rs 1314 to 2590) and Improvement in the spinning efficiency by 213.79 (%).

Further the switch over to more practical oriented courses and training based one year professional skill development program under Student READY has further proved to be beneficial. Declaration of agriculture as a professional degree further boosted the morale of the students to join the degree in agriculture and allied sciences.
