About the university

Dr Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan has its origin from Himachal Agriculture College, Solan, established in 1962 with its affiliation to Punjab University, Chandigarh. The College was raised to the status of Post Graduate College, Himachal Pradesh Agriculture College and Research Institute in 1965 with the introduction of M.Sc. (Agriculture) programme. It was affiliated to Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla in 1970 and thereafter it became Agriculture Complex in July 1971. It further became Horticulture Complex of Himachal Pradesh University and Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya, Palampur in 1976 and 1978, respectively. Later on, this complex was recognized as Dr Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, Solan on December 1, 1985. The university has now grown into its own kind, not only in India but in entire Asia with new dimensions of education, research and extension in horticulture, forestry and allied areas. The university has two constituent colleges viz., College of Horticulture and College of Forestry located at the main campus, Nauni, having nine and seven departments, respectively besides a new College of Horticulture and Forestry at Neri, Hamirpur. In addition, there are six Regional Horticulture Research and Training Stations, nine Research Sub-Stations and five Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) situated in different agro-climatic zones of the State.

The University is located at an elevation of about 1300 m above mean sea level. The total farm area of the university is spread over 545 ha at the main campus and 202 ha with the Regional Horticultural Research and Training Stations and the Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs). The university is fully determined to impart quality education to its students and also to disseminate technical know-how to end users for overall development of the rural masses with agro based livelihood security. Motivated and enterprising farming community, committed scientific and extension manpower of the university and appropriate policy planning are providing necessary impetus to achieve the university mission and goals.

Achievements

1. The ICAR Central Assistance has improved and strengthened the amenities in the departments for imparting quality education and conducting good quality research and preparing simplified practical manuals for UG as well as PG teaching.

2. The participation of teachers in the seminars/symposia/ workshops through ICAR funding has contributed in updating/exchanging their knowledge with fellow scientists and enhanced their exposure and skill in planning research programmes.

3. There are certain equipments which needs repair/replacement after a certain period of time for sustaining the laboratories infrastructural facilities which has been very well addressed by the ICAR funding.

4. All these have contributed for quality human resource development, good performance in JRF/SRF and ARS exams and placement skilled professionals at national /international levels.

5. The major impact has been assessed in the enrolment of girls students which has been increased (46% in XI Plan to 57.1% in XII Plan) owing to the provision of hostel facilities to all girl students by adding 3 Nos. of girls hostels.

6. Enhancement in infrastructure facilities has attracted more number of students to seek admission in Horticulture and Forestry programmes raised from 2698 in 2011-12 to more than 5200 in 2017-18.

7. The quality of research work has been enhanced as envisaged from increase in NAAS rated publications (384 in XI Plan to 962 in XIIPlan).

8. The enhanced grant received from the ICAR during XII Plan has placed the university on 84^th rank in all institutional category, 51^stin University category and 5^th in Agricultural University Category(NIRF, MHRD, 2017)

9. ICAR Certificate of Appreciation for Achieving Mile Stone for submitting more than 1100 theses in the digital repository (Krishikosh).
